Dinosaur Hall - Diatryma

photo of Diatryma skeleton

Diatryma lived 55 million years ago in the Cenozoic Era, after the extinction of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period about 65 million years ago.  Scientists have debated whether Diatryma, who could not fly, was a carnivore (meat-eater) or herbivore (plant-eater).  Modern large flightless birds, like ostriches, are all herbivores, adding weight to the view that Diatryma was a plant-eater.
